Daytona State Sophomores Compete in FCSAA Showcase

Daytona State College has six sophomores named to the Fall All-Star Showcase that will compete October 26th in Lakeland, FL.  This showcase recognizes the top players in the Florida Region, while also allowing these players to exhibit their talents to college coaches and major league scouts from all over the country.

Falcon players Johnny Ortiz, Phoenix Sanders, Austin Marrs, Luke Johnston, Shane Swanson, and Joe Shue have been named to the 2014 Fall All-Star Showcase.

Ortiz is a left hand pitcher from Coral Springs, FL.  Ortiz played in 10 games last year, pitching 55 innings on the season.  He gave up 55 hits, allowing 31 runs and accumulating 28 strikeouts.  Ortiz finished the 2014 season with a 3.27 ERA.

Sanders, a right hand pitcher, returns to the Falcons after a strong summer performance with the Northwood League where he was named to the 200 Top Prospect List for the league.  Sanders played for the Northwood League’s Willmar Stingers recording an impressive 1.89 ERA on the summer.  Last year for the Falcons, Sanders pitched in 11 games, finishing the season with a personal 4-5 record.  In his 61.1 innings pitched, Sanders notched 49 strikeouts and finished the season with a 3.38 ERA.

Marrs, a sophomore infielder from Palm Beach Gardens, was also named to the 2014 All-Star Showcase team.  In his freshman season for the Falcons, Marrs played in 29 games.  He had 39 hits in his 111 at bats last season, recording an impressive .351 batting average and .433 on base percentage. 

Johnston returns to the middle infield as the Falcon’s shortstop.  In the field last year, Johnston provided a solid glove with a .913 fielding percentage.  Johnston had a 110 at bats last year with a .200 batting average.

Returning to the outfield for the Falcons this year is Swanson.  Last year, Swanson recorded an impressive .956 field percentage in his 24 games played.  In Swanson’s 79 at bats, he had a .266 batting average and a .367 slug percentage.

The final Falcon playing in this weekend’s showcase is Falcon catcher, Joe Shue.  Shue was a force for the Falcons behind the plate in his 30 games in 2014.  Last season Shue threw out 8 runners that attempted to steal.  At the plate, he hit .230 in his 100 at bats.

Daytona State will be well represented well this weekend as the Sophomore Showcase kicks off in Lakeland, FL.
