Lady Falcons 4-1 After First Week of Play

Lady Falcon Volleyball 4-1 after First Week of Play

Daytona State Volleyball began the season Tuesday night claiming a win against the Titans of Eastern Florida State College.  The Falcons controlled the match with a strong 3 straight set victory.  The Falcons were led offensively by Halle Dotson.  Dotson recorded 10 kills, hitting an impressive .381 on the night.  Kiara Colson led the defense with 11 digs, closely followed by Joely Cabrera with 10 digs.

Next, the Falcons went on the road this past weekend to compete in a tough Labor Day Tournament hosted by Hillsborough Community College.  The Falcons opened up the tournament with a match against conference rival, College of Central Florida.  A five set battle ensued, and the Falcons were able to pull out a victory against an impressive Patriots squad.  Dotson and Alica Kandler led the Falcon’s offensive charge.  Dotson recorded a season high 20 kills on the match, closely followed by Kandler’s 14 kills. Colson added her season best 20 digs to lead the defense, while Caitlin Conner contributed 50 assists in the Falcon win.

After winning an emotional match against the Patriots, the Falcons had to quickly switch gears to take on Hillsborough Community College.  A worn out Falcon squad was no match for the seasoned Hillsborough team.  Hillsborough easily took down Daytona State in three straight sets.

The Falcons finished the weekend with two wins on the second day of tournament play.  The morning match featured the Falcons against St. Petersburg College.  After easily securing set one, the Falcons found themselves in a battle for the next three sets.  Daytona State claimed the win in four sets.  Emily Loftus led the Falcon offense against St. Petersburg College with an impressive .367 hitting percentage, accumulating 12 kills on the match.  Dotson and Kandler combined for an additional 24 kills on the match.  Colson again led the Falcons defensively with 16 digs, and Conner finished the match with 47 assists.

Daytona State’s final match of the tournament was against Palm Beach State.  Palm Beach State knocked off Hillsborough Community College in their morning match up. Despite Palm Beach’s impressive performance in their morning match against Hillsborough, they were unable to stop the impressive offensive play by the Falcons.  The Falcons finished the day with their season high team attack percentage, hitting a strong .236.  Daytona State was led again by Kandler (14 kills) and Dotson (13 kills).  Colson led the defense with 18 digs and Conner contributed 40 assists.

Daytona State College will be back in action Tuesday night at 6 pm as they take on Indian River State College.
