LADY FALCONS WIN SEASON OPENING EVENT, BECKER TAKES INDIVIDUAL TITLE

September 20, 2015 - Daytona Beach, FL:  The Daytona State College Women’s Golf Team began their quest to recapture the NJCAA National Championship by winning their first event of the season.  The Lady Falcons had a convincing win at the Lady Falcon Invitational at LPGA International Golf Club in Daytona Beach, FL.

With a score of 596, the Lady Falcons won the tournament by 15 shots over Seminole State College who posted a score of 611 for second place. Florida Southern College (640), Florida Atlantic University (644), and Florida Southern’s B Team (645) rounded out the top five.

The Falcons were led by tournament medalist Claire Becker, a freshman from Lutz, FL, who shot scores of 76-68.  Becker found herself tied with Josefine Garton from Seminole State College who posted scores of 72-72 for top honors.  The two players returned to the 18th hole for a sudden death playoff where Becker posted a par which was good enough for the individual win. Becker recorded her career low round of 68 in the final round which included 4 birdies and 14 pars.  Katie Veale, a freshman from Orlando, FL finished in third place with scores of 75-72 and sophomore Ji Sun Kang from South Korea, finished in 4thplace with scores of 74-74.  Other finishers for the Falcons include Gillian Alexander from Pittsburgh, PA who posted scores of 76-79, Kaye Kwon from the Philippines with scores of 76-81, and Cristine Lee from Orlando, FL with scores of 84-84.  Freshman Elizabeth Jackson had to withdraw due to illness.

Falcon head coach Laura Brown was very pleased by the season opening event.  “I am very happy and proud of my players on their impressive win today.  They played very solid and this win was well deserved.  I was especially pleased with my top three players, as they all finished in the top 5 and it was great to see my freshmen play so well.  Having Claire win her first event individually was outstanding.  Having her record her career best round in just her second round as a collegiate player and winning in a playoff was so exciting for her.  The Lady Falcons return to competition September 28-29 at the Jacksonville Classic in Ponte Vedra, FL.
