Falcons Off to Hot Start in 2015

November 4th, 2015

The Falcons Men’s Basketball Team is off to a quick 2-0 start following wins at last weekend’s Eastern Florida State Halloween Classic.  Head Coach, Ryan Ridder, was very pleased with this past weekend’s performance in Melbourne, Florida.

On Friday night, Daytona State took on Atlanta Metro, in what they anticipated would be a physical match up.  The Falcons found themselves in the driver’s seat, cruising past Atlanta Metro 85-59.

Daytona State College put together another impressive performance during the second day of play at the Eastern Florida Halloween Classic.  The Falcons defeated USC-Salkehatchie in a match up that ended decisively in the Falcons favor.  Daytona State topped USC-Salkehatchie 78-50.

At the junior college level, when rosters are made up of solely of freshmen and sophomores, experience can be hard to come by.  The Falcons however are embracing their early success, and owe it firsthand to the return of key sophomores in Daytona State’s lineup. The Falcons were led offensively by two Falcon Sophomores. Tyquone Greer, a 6’6” guard/forward, finished the weekend averaging 15 points and 7 rebounds.  While Greer’s teammate, Oscar Cabrera, a 6’4” guard, added a weekend average of 14 points and 7 rebounds.

In addition to some stellar sophomores on the Falcon roster, Daytona State College has some budding talent waiting in the wings. Daytona State’s freshman also provided key contributions in Daytona State’s first two wins of the season. Freshman, Nashaad Mackey, came up big on the boards for Daytona State.  After pulling down an average 7 rebounds in Friday night’s match up with Atlanta Metro, Mackey went on rampage, recording a remarkable 20 rebounds Saturday against USC-Salkehatchie. Freshman, Rashaard Pringle and Alston Jones also saw their share of minutes in the first two games of the Falcon’s season.

Daytona State College launches their home opener Friday night at 8:00 PM. The Falcons will look to continue their hot start as they take on the Golden Bears of Clinton Junior College Friday night, and ASA Saturday night at 6PM.
