Women's Cross Country Team Heads To Region 8 Championships

Women's Cross Country Team Heads To Region 8 Championships

Daytona State Women's Cross Country will take on Region 8 teams this Tuesday at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee.  The race looks to be a heated battle between the Falcons and Pasco Hernando, ranked 8th and 10th in the country in the latest NJCAA Division II women's poll.  The Falcons are lead by Giovana Meade (18:28) and Shannon Jones (18:58), both have run under 19 minutes for 5,000 meters this season.  Only a handful of women have achieved those times this season in Division II.  The Falcons have been putting in weeks of hard work and Coach Judy Wilson is optimistic about the team's chances for a title.  "The last time we won a Region 8 title was in 2020 when we took both men's and women's titles, and both individual titles.  But this is the fastest team we have ever had at Daytona State and these last four weeks of training have been really solid."  The Falcons will need good performanaces from Lauren Schaudel, Brooke Gerrits, Molly Burt and Fran Azzollini who have all been running very well in training.  Top seven runners in the race earn All Region honors.  A Falcon runner has taken the individual title in 2020 and 2021 with Harleigh Crist as a back to back champion, and Shannon Jones took the 2022 title.
