Eight Second Half Goals Over USC Lancaster Lead No. 5 Daytona State to their Sixth Win

Daytona Beach, FL- Eight second half goals scored by eight different Falcons gave them their sixth win and shutout of the season on Saturday afternoon in Lancaster, SC.

During the first half of the play and a weather delay the Falcons outshot the Lancers 17-2 but were unable to break through the compact defensive shape of USC.

The second half started off strong in the first 3 minutes of play as sophomore Elisa Cruz (Oviedo, FL) had her goal called offsides.  Just seven minutes later, sophomore Akari Kishida (Tokyo, Japan) would open the scoring for the Falcons with a double assist from sophomores Jada Samuels (Tampa, FL) and Wakaba Kogure (Tokyo, Japan). The goals would keep coming for Daytona State over the remainder of the second half.

Freshman Aiyana Leslie (Winter Garden, FL) would score her second goal of the season with an assist from Cruz in the 63rd minute. Kogure would score the next goal for the Falcons in the 64th minute from an assist by freshman defender, Sophia Varga (Flagler Beach, FL). In the 68th minute of play freshman Mia Gonzalez (Cape Coral, FL) would score her third goal of the season. Newcomer Carsyn Petersen (Greeley, CO) would score an unassisted goal in the 73rd minute beating a Lancer defender down the right side of the field.

The final three goals of the game were firsts for newcomers Mariona Gamez (Barcelona, Spain), Thea Oberhoff (Bremen, Germany) and Abbey Brosnihan (Fort Pierce, FL). Gamez would put away her chance from a penalty that she drew in the box after being taken down by a Lancer defender.  Oberhoff would score her goal in the 83rd minute from an assist by freshman Manuela Aguirre (Orlando, FL).  The final goal of the game would be scored by Brosnihan off a header from a corner kick taken by Samuels, her second assist of the afternoon.

Newcomer goalkeepers, Emma Broch Laursen (Randers, Denmark) and Makenzie Morris (Altamonte Springs, FL) pick up the shutout and win for the Falcons.  Laursen made one save in her 64 minutes of play and Morris recorded two saves during her time in frame.

The Falcons outshot the Lancers 39-4 and 17-3 on goal.  Daytona State had eleven corner kicks on the afternoon.  The Falcons have now scored 35 goals in the first six games of the season and have not allowed a goal.

"It is always a challenge to go on the road and play two games, but to pick up two wins and both being shutouts was even greater", stated Head Coach, Hope Clark. "Having played USC Lancaster just 6 days ago at home in Daytona it presented a different scenario coming to their place and having them put together a different tactical game plan against us.  I was proud of the problem solving the team displayed and the discipline to focus on what we need to do as a program." "It is never a bad thing to have your scoring coming from so many different players, it shows our depth and versatility."

Next up, the No. 5 Daytona State Falcons will take on LSU Eunice (1-3-1) in Panama City Beach at the Panama City Beach Sports Complex on Friday, September 15th at 12:00pm EST.
