Daytona State College Women’s Soccer Wins Home Opener Against #10 Southwestern Illinois 5-0

Daytona Beach, FL - The Daytona State Falcons (2-0-1) opened their home schedule for the 2022 soccer season with a 5-0 win over #10 NJCAA D2 Southwestern Illinois (0-2-1).

The win came despite the attempt to kick the match off on Thursday evening.  The teams were unable to take the field on Thursday due to weather and rescheduled the match for Friday morning.  Consistent lightning delays throughout the morning saw the match end after 3pm. The first goal of the match would come from Freshman Alexandra Draper (Lutz, FL) as she netted her first goal of the season off a corner kick. The Falcons would find the back of the net three more times before halftime.

Sophomore Alison Worley (Melbourne, FL) would score two goals in the match, one in each half.  Freshman Alejandra Espinosa (Boca Raton, FL) would deliver a goal and assist for the second time this season.  The third goal of the game was delivered by Freshman Wakaba Kogure (Tokyo, Japan) in the 33rd minute of play.

The second half was a bit quieter for the Falcons after returning from another weather delay.  The final goal was scored in the 73rd minute by Worley with a double assist from Espinosa and Freshman Alexis Harden (Port Orange, FL).

Sophomore goalkeeper Lucia Guemes (Ampuero, Spain) would earn her first solo shutout of the season.

"It was a great home opener for our program, the ladies had a great warmup and opened the match with high intensity" commented head coach, Hope Clark "I was excited for the ladies to have the opportunity to play after having the game cancelled the evening before.  The team was looking forward to playing under the lights, so I know they were a bit disappointed.  The season has already been full of adversity regarding weather so I was excited they could see their desire to compete pay off today."

The Falcons had 22 shots compared to Southwestern Illinois 3 and 13 shots on goal compared to 2.

The #20 Falcons are now 2-0-1 on the season while SWIC is 0-2-1

Daytona State will host USC Lancaster Sunday, September 4th at 2:00pm.
