Falcons Soccer Defeats Polk State in Overtime, 2-1

Daytona Beach, FL.- The Daytona State College Soccer team (2-1) defeated Polk State (8-1) in a nail biter finish Wednesday, 2-1 in overtime play.

The Falcons got the scoring going in the first half with a goal by Elena Diaz (Madrid, Spain) from an assist by Lucia Garcia (Austurias, Spain).  The Falcons would go into halftime with the lead.

The second half, would allow Polk State the equalizer creating a counter attack off of a Falcon corner kick.  The game would remain 1-1 and headed into overtime.

In the first overtime, the Falcons pressed the Eagles, outshooting them 4-1.  Heading into the second overtime, the Falcons broke free with beautiful ball played by Isabella DaSilva (Orlando, FL) to Hannah Henn (Venice, FL) who redirected the ball on heel pass that DaSilva then found Diaz for the second goal of the evening and the game winner.  The goal was Diaz’s second of the day.

“We needed this win,” commented head coach, Hope Clark.  “We have had a 21-day break with no games, so we were headed into the game sort of blind in regard to game experience.” “This was a great way to open up conference play, we faced adversity after Polk State tied it up, but our players made the adjustments and really played with a lot of heart, effort and pride.”

The Falcons defense kept the Polk State offense away from the goal only allowing them 7 shots on goal.  Goalkeeper, Lucia Guemes (Ampuero, Spain) had 6 saves holding the Eagles offense to one goal.  The Falcons outshot Polk State with 12 shots on goal giving the Eagle in the goal 11 saves.

DSC outshot the Eagles 18-7. The Falcons capitalized on the corner kicks as well claiming more than Polk State.

The Falcons are back in action Saturday, Sept. 25 to take on #5 Eastern Florida. The kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Falcon Field. Live broadcast will be available at dscfalcons.com.
