Guffey Tabbed as New Falcons Women’s Basketball Coach

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Daytona State College has announced that Amber Guffey will become the sixth head coach in the Falcons women’s basketball program history. Guffey will begin her new role on July 9th.

Guffey comes to Daytona State after most recently being the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at her alma mater, Murray State University, in Kentucky. In her role as the top assistant coach at Murray State she oversaw player development, camps, scouting reports, and overseeing the recruiting process for the Racers. Guffey served in this role for six seasons.

Guffey was responsible for recruiting and developing some of the best players in the history of the Racers program including Ke’Shunan James – OVC Player of the Year (2018); Bria Bethea – OVC All-Conference (2018); Evelyn Adebayo – OVC All-Conference/Newcomer (2019), and set school record for double-doubles (2019), and Grad Transferred to UCONN (2019); Laci Hawthorne – OVC All-Newcomer (2020); Macey Turley – OVC Freshman of the Year (2019), OVC All-Conference all four years, OVC All-Newcomer (2019), OVC All-Tourney (2021); Alexis Burpo – OVC All-Conference (2020, 2022); Hannah McKay – OVC All-Conference (2022), 1000 career points and 600 career rebounds (2024); Katelyn young – OVC All-Newcomer (2021), OVC/MVC All-Conference (4-years), OVC Player of the Year (2022), OVC All-Tourney (2022), All-Time Leading Scorer at MSU (2024), 1000 career rebounds; Haven Ford – Miss Kentucky Basketball (1st at MSU), MVC All-Freshman Team (2024); Ava Learn MVC All-Newcomer (2024).

Before Murray State, she spent two seasons at Murray High School as an assistant coach and helped lead the Tigers to the 2016 All-A State championship. The Tigers also won a pair of All-A Region titles, back-to-back District 4 championships and made appearances in the KHSAA Final Four in 2016 and 2017 under Guffey. MHS compiled as record of 63-8 in Guffey’s two seasons. She also coached a pair of all-state players while at MHS.

Guffey’s playing career at Murray State which competes in the Ohio Valley Conference was Hall of Fame worthy. She was part of the class of 2018 inducted into the Murray State Hall of Fame. She was a three-time All-OVC selection and was named to the OVC All-Tournament Team three times. She earned the OVC Tournament MVP in 2008. Guffey earned 2008-09 NCAA Women’s Basketball Academic All-American of the Year honors and was a three-time Academic All-District honoree.

Guffey finished her career as the Racers third all-time leading scorer in program history with 1,877 points. She was also the all-time leader in career assists (512), free throws made (587), games played (123) and minutes played (3,873) at MSU. She also ranks second all-time in career 3-pointers made with 210, and second in career free-throws percentage, shooting at a clip of 87.1 percent.

Following Guffey’s career at Murray State she played overseas professionally in 2009-10 at Residence Walferdange, Belredange, Luxembourg in the Diekirch League. She helped lead her team to the playoffs where she averaged 24.8 ppg, 8.5 rpg, 3.9 apg, and 1.5 spg.

Guffey earned her Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education from Murray State University in 2008, and Master of Science in Human Development and Leadership from Murray State University in 2012.
