Defensive effort leads to Falcons 71-53 win versus Miami-Dade

Daytona Beach, FL. – On day one of the FCSAA Region 8 Women's Basketball Shootout the Daytona State Falcons saw four Falcons in double figures, including a game-high 17 points from Sophomore Guard Nashani Gilbert in Friday night's victory over Miami-Dade 71-53.  Gilbert finished the contest shooting 7-for-14 shooting from the field, 3-for-5 from three, six rebounds, and two steals.

"This was a team win, I felt like our ladies locked in all well in preparation and made a commitment on the defensive end. We are proud of all of them as we saw production from all of our ladies." Head Coach Tron Griffin stated.

The Falcons turned up the defensive pressure from the start using a 19-3 run in the first quarter to take the lead at the half. Daytona State scored 21 points for the game off the Sharks' 26 turnovers. Freshman Guard Tasia Johnson scored 11 points on 3-for-6 shooting from the three, with three rebounds, two assists, and one steal. Freshman Guard Alexis Staton scored 11 points, while Freshman Forward Rylan Moffit finished with 10 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Guard Danea Mackey recorded a career-high 8 assists in the victory.

The Falcons return to "The Nest" Saturday on day two of the FCSAA Region 8 Women's Basketball Shootout to take on #5 Gulf Coast State College at 4:00 p.m.
