DSC Softball Splits with St. Petersburg

Daytona Beach, FL

The Falcons split with St. Peterburg College at home Thursday night, dropping game one 7-5 and bouncing back to win game two 9-1.

Game One

SPC scored four runs on four hits in the first inning and added another in the second to jump out to a 5-0 lead.  Daytona State answered back in the third with three runs.  Brianna Weimer singled to start the inning, Adriana Onessimo followed with a single of her own, Kadrianna Grinstead then bunted for a base hit to load the bases.  Amayia Hernandez brought in Weimer on a Fielder's Choice and Mattie Linhart brought in Onessimo with a Sac Fly to center field.  Jael Wilde then singled home Grinstead, narrowing the lead 5-3.  The score would stay there until the seventh when SPC collected three hits and a walk to extend their lead 7-3.  The Falcons wouldn't go down without a fight however, Onessimo singled to start the inning but a ground ball double play slowed the DSC momentum.  Hernandez then had a two-out triple, followed by a Linhart double, and Wilde single to cut the lead 7-5.  Rylee Konowalchuk then worked a walk to put the tying run on base, but a fly out ended the DSC rally.

Madison Mitzel took her first loss of the year in the circle.  Wilde collected three hits while driving in two.  Onessimo and Hernandez had two hits each as well.

Game Two

The nightcap was all Daytona State.  The home team went up 2-0 in the first inning on an Amayia Hernandez double which scored Kiley Lucas who has walked to start the game.  A St. Peterburg error allowed Hernandez to score.  SPC would get one back in the fourth to make the game 2-1, but DSC would score seven unanswered runs to end the game in the sixth via the 8-run rule.  In the fourth, Kiera Mainolfi singled to start the inning and Leighton Strickland came in to pinch run for her.  After a Fielder's Choice and a walk, Kiley Lucas doubled to plate a run and Adriana Onessimo singled home two more to further the lead 5-1.  Daytona would bring home another run in the fifth when Jael Wilde singled and stole second, then Brianna Weimer singled her home.  DSC would wend the game in the sixth with three more runs.  Hernandez, Linhart, and Wilde would all single in a row to drive in a run.  Jaelyn Lockhart then hit a sac fly to right field to bring in the second run.  The game ended when Wilde scored on a past ball.

Mariah Rivera earned her fifth win in the circle, scattering five hits and allowing one earned run.

Daytona State heads to Eastern Florida State on Saturday and comes home to take on Pasco-Hernandez on Sunday.
