Daytona State Earns Sportsmanship Award and Kellman Earns NJCAA Top Defender

The NJCAA National Tournament committee has recognized Daytona State College with the “Sportsmanship Award.” Daytona is well known for doing things the right way. This award further reinforces the discipline and professionalism that has become evident with the Falcon’s program. Coach Sasnett said, “he is proud of his team building a culture of sportsmanship and citizenship, both on and off the field.”

When Head Coach Bart Sasnett started the program, both President Tom LoBasso and Athletic Director Will Dunne shared their vision with him on what they wanted to see in the soccer program at Daytona State. Goals included:

1. Student athlete success in the classroom

2. Student athletes who represent Daytona State College with class and integrity (not only good players but also having good citizenship)

3. Compete to win at a high level

While all colleges hope to echo these characteristics, Daytona State is proud to continue displaying these characteristics year in and out. It’s a testament of discipline and hard work by the Daytona State men’s soccer culture.

Athletic Director Will Dunne commented on the Sportsmanship Award, “I’m proud of our coaches and men’s soccer student-athletes for earning the team sportsmanship award at the national championship event. The truth is good sportsmanship is easy to display when you win, but to do so with a gutting loss speaks to the character of our coaches and players, and I’m proud of them all. They all reflect well on our program and institution.”

Curtez Kellman (Georgetown, Guyana) has been selected as the top defensive player in the NJCAA 2021 National Tournament. Kellman is a standout midfielder who also plays center back for the Falcons. He was also selected to the 11-man All-Tournament Team. Curtez Kellman on his honor, “It’s a really great achievement for me on me winning the defensive player of the tournament, I’m really honored. I obviously couldn’t have done this without my teammates and coaches who help me tremendously throughout the season. I also want to extend gratitude towards being here at Daytona State College, and for Coach Bart giving me the opportunity to be a part of such a great program. Within my year of being here, I’ve learned so much and met a lot of great teammates who I call now, family. I want to say thank you once again for being a part of this program and I will truly miss it.”

Coach Bart on Curtez, “Curtez is an elite competitor that is so deserving of this award. Kellman makes things look easy and that’s a special talent. He’s a 2-dimensional player that dominates in the midfield and backline. His strengths include 1v1 defending, ball winner, tactical IQ, strong passing range, and work rate. It has been an absolute joy to coach and learn from him!”
