Daytona State heads home from Tampa, FL with a 4-0 record! The Falcons had a quick turnaround from last night’s victory against Miami Dade. DSC battled through a hard fought game and came away with a win against the host, Hillsborough Hawks, 85-71! Khadim Sy finished with 23 points and 9 rebounds, while Williams added 22 points, 7 assists, and 6 steals against the Hawks. Both Sy and Williams had a spectacular weekend for the Falcons.

Coach Morris had this to say after the game, “We played the most complete game of our young season. We guarded really well and scored in the half court. Obviously, we have shown we can score the ball, but sometimes we lose interest in guarding. Tonight, I thought we played to our strengths and bought into being a great defense.”

What are your thoughts on how your team responded to playing back to back days? Morris, “Well considering the Friday night game consisted of over 100 possessions I thought we bounced back well. Tonight’s game vs Hillsborough was a different game. They slowed the pace and tried to make it a slower game. I thought our guys did a great job of showing they can play both styles. Good teams are able to play in the half court slower game, or play at a higher pace. Overall I thought we handled the back to back well.”

Your team seems to be very deep, as far as talent, on the depth chart. Could you comment on how everyone is contributing? Morris, “We do believe we are a deep team. Each person has a unique role. Sometimes that is hard for young players to buy into. It also can be difficult for the sophomores who are used to playing a lot of minutes. The best thing about this team is the chemistry. Guys truly love each other and pull for each other. If we can continue to get out of ourselves and into the team, we have a chance.”

What do you need to improve on moving forward? Morris, “We have to be a better rebounding team. Our first shot defense is really good right now, but our second shot defense is not so good. Typically, in any sport when you give the opposing team second chances they have a higher percentage of conversion. We could do ourselves a lot of good if we rebounded the first miss. We also have to continue to play for forty minutes. I didn’t think we did that great this weekend. We must learn how to put teams away when we have them on the ropes.”
