Just the Beginning of Their Success

Just the Beginning of Their Success

"The tassel was worth the hassle". A common quote used by so many in college when they finally get that degree. For some, college is a breeze. For others, college poses new challenges daily. The great thing about a challenge is that it puts you in an uncomfortable situation and the only way to grow is to learn to be comfortable during those times.

"I would say that our sophomores have faced adversity in the classroom and on the field many times during their tenure here at Daytona State College," says Head Coach Bart Sasnett. "The great thing about this class is that they were always up for the challenge. They wanted nothing more than to be successful at everything they did. Whether they were in study hall or on the field training, this group gave everything they had to achieve individual and team excellence."

The sophomore class of the Men's Soccer Team showed that classroom excellence throughout their time here at Daytona State College by maintaining a cumulative GPA over a 3.0. After two years of service to the college and Men's Soccer Program, the sophomore class received a cumulative GPA of 3.32.

"Seeing this academic success is what makes me happy," said Assistant Coach Travis Rovillo. "Soccer has been my life forever and I know that is the case for all soccer players. We live and breathe for the game. But what brings me the most joy is seeing these guys succeed in the classroom. Watching them surprise themselves by the grades they make and the milestones they reach; nothing compares to that feeling. I couldn't be prouder of them."

For the 2019-2020 school year, the sophomore class had a cumulative GPA of 3.27. "When we were struck by a global pandemic and all schooling was transitioned to virtual learning, I was not concerned about our players accepting the challenge of facing a new way of learning," said Sasnett. The sophomores, knowing the severity of the crisis, were still able to obtain a cumulative GPA of 3.53 for the spring semester. All 13 sophomores received a GPA over a 3.0. Seven sophomores obtained over a 3.5 and one attained a 4.0.

Not only did the sophomore class of the Men's Soccer Team obtain a stellar GPA, but all 13 of them will be graduating with degrees from Daytona State College. Two of them graduated in the Fall of 2019, eight graduated on May 11th and the remaining three will graduate this summer.

"This is why I love my job," said Sasnett. "Being able to watch guys graduate and move on to their future schools is what it's all about. Daytona State College has given them all the tools for success, and I look forward to their continued accomplishments in the future."
