Men's Soccer Wins Two on the Road

The Daytona State College Men's soccer team has had a challenging last 72 hours. Having to face Region 8 opponent ASA College (Miami) on Sunday and then Georgia Military College on Tuesday, all within 43 hours of each other was not an easy task; but the Falcons rose to the challenge. On top of the time constraints, both of these matches were away matches for the Falcons.

"Going on the road and winning matches is never easy," said Daytona State College men's soccer coach Bart Sasnett. "Our guys showed a lot of heart and determination to get through both matches. Spending so much time on the bus traveling gets to you after a while but the guys played through it."

The Falcons picked up the first of their two wins on Sunday against ASA College (Miami). The Falcons scored the lone goal of the match in the 39th minute, giving them a 1-0 lead going into halftime. The goal came from freshman Dujon Martin. The assist came from Juan Esteban Carmona. This is Carmona's 8th assist on the season.

"Dujon was in the right place at the right time," said coach Sasnett. "He came off the bench hungry for a goal and managed to find it right before half."

The Falcons and the Silver Storm fought it out for the next 45 minutes of the half. The Silver Storm had a chance on goal in the remaining minutes of the match with a free kick from right outside of the 18-yard box. Sophomore goalkeeper Santiago Esparza made an incredible save to keep the score at 1-0 and give the Falcons the win.

"ASA is always a challenging game," said Sasnett. They are well coached and very organized. They like to move the ball around and play real soccer."

Turn around to 43 hours later. The Falcons are in Georgia facing Georgia Military College. This was a rescheduled match for the Falcons due to hurricane Dorian.

The Falcons went into halftime 0-0 with the Bulldogs. After a tough speech from coach Sasnett, the Falcons came out in the second half ready to win. Scoring two goals within twelve minutes of each other, the Falcons were now up 2-0 on the Bulldogs. The first goal came from sophomore center back Sergio Molina, who received a pass from sophomore John Nalus and placed it nicely into the back of the net. The second goal came from freshman Dujon Martin with another assist from John Nalus. This was Martin's 8th goal of the season.

"Getting those goals gave us the momentum we needed in the match," said coach Sasnett.

The Bulldogs would score one goal with ten minutes remaining in the match. Putting the score now at 2-1. The Falcons kept pushing through the adversity and had multiple chances on goal. The Bulldogs goalkeeper kept them in the match with a few last minute saves.

"Georgia Military College is a tough team to beat," said head coach Bart Sasnett. "They will fight and grind until the final minute of the game."

The Falcons, now 8-3 on the season and 1-2 in Region 8 play, will be on the road again this Friday to face Region 8 opponent Broward College at 6:00 PM. The Seahawks defeated the Falcons in the first matchup this season 2-1.
