Men’s Soccer Team Falls Short in Region 8 Opening Matches

The Daytona State College Men's soccer team fell short in its first two Region 8 matches against Broward College and NJCAA No. 3-ranked Eastern Florida State College.

On September 17th, the Falcons hosted Region 8 opponent Broward College in the Region 8 Regular Season Opener. Going into halftime with the score tied at 0-0, the Falcons were hoping to gain momentum going into the second half. With only 17 minutes left on the clock, the Seahawks scored twice in three minutes, putting the score at 2-0. The Falcons fought back and made the score 2-1 with only five minutes remaining in the match. With numerous shots just coming short of the goal, the Falcons could not get the equalizer and the Seahawks walked away with a 2-1 victory over the Falcons.

"It was a well-played match," said head coach Bart Sasnett. "Broward is a well-coached team and very organized. We had our chances and just didn't put them away when we could."

The Falcons have a current record in the Region 8 Regular Season with Broward College of 4-3-1.

Last Friday night, the Falcons hosted the NJCAA No. 3-ranked Eastern Florida State College Titans in a matchup that was a clash between two of the top teams in the country.

Going to a scoreless tie after 90 minutes, the two teams continued to battle into overtime and double overtime. Unfortunate for the Falcons, two minutes into the second overtime, the Titans capitalized on a cross that ended the match with a golden goal.

The Titans goalkeeper kept them in the match by saving a penalty kick in the second half that could have put the Falcons up 1-0.

This was the first time in the Falcons history where they have not beat the Titans in the season opener between them. This puts the all-time regular season record between them at 4-4 since 2016.

"They are a tough team to beat," said Sasnett. "It is never an easy match when we play them. Fantastic match for the NJCAA and Region 8. Both sides of the ball is talented and fought hard throughout the game. I am proud of the way my players fought and showed resilience throughout the match."

The Falcons, who are now ranked 14th in the NJCAA, are currently sitting at 0-2 in Region 8 play but hope to turn it around Sunday night when they travel to Miami to play Region 8 opponent ASA College (Miami).

"We have never been here before," said coach Sasnett. "We know everything happens for a reason and we will bounce back from this."
