12th Ranked Falcons Go 2-0 in Daytona State Classic

DAYTONA BEACH, FL – The Daytona State Falcons opened the 2019-2020 season in exciting fashion with a 78-52 win over Snead State. The first ten minutes of the game were spent getting comfortable and knocking off the rust from a long off-season, but it didn't last long. "I thought we came out a little anxious at first. We started three guys that hadn't played in a college game before, and they were feeling it out and trying to get comfortable. Once we settled in and started playing our brand of basketball, we played well" said McCann of the Falcons' slow start.

Ten Falcons' contributed to the scoring attack led by Dante Moses' 19 points and 8 rebounds. Kam Cunningham provided a spark off the bench with a highlight reel dunk and perfection from the field while scoring 14 points. Jacob Tracey added 10 points and 8 assists and Issa Muhammad added 10 points and 6 rebounds. "We really shared the ball tonight. We had 22 assists on our 32 baskets. That's a testament to the players that we have and their willingness to be great teammates and do what it takes to win."

Although the Falcons shot the ball 58.2% from the field and 66.7% from beyond the arc, McCann would like to see his team take better care of the ball and take advantage of free throw situations. "We had 29 turnovers with most of them when we were trying to make the homerun play. We preach to our guys about consistently making simple plays. With our talent level, if we commit to keeping it simple, we can be pretty good" McCann stated.

The Falcons had a quick turn around with the second game of the Daytona State Classic starting at 4:00 pm on Saturday. In an up and down affair, the 12th ranked Falcons pulled away with a 87-86 victory over Denmark Tech. "It wasn't a pretty win, but we were fortunate to come away with it in the end. It's early with 13 new guys still figuring out how to play with each other and within our system. It won't always be pretty, but we showed a great deal of toughness down the stretch to pull it out. Hats off to Denmark as they came out and challenged our guys from the tip" said McCann after the win.

Daytona State was lead by Dante Moses with 21 points and 10 rebounds and Issad Solano with 18 points, 6 assists, and 5 rebounds. Kam Cunningham chipped in 13 points and Jacob Tracey added 10 pts and 6 assists.

The team will be back in action on Tuesday, November 5th at 6:00 PM as they take on Triple Threat Prep out of Miami, Florida.
