Bruna Avila Named Region 8 Setter of the Week

Daytona State Volleyball recorded an exceptional week of volleyball that began with a Mid-Florida Conference win over 8th ranked, College of Central Florida.  The Lady Falcons followed this win with a win over conference opponent, Eastern Florida on Thursday.  Saturday the Lady Falcons were back in action as they took on the 5th ranked Western Mexico Military Institute.  Though they fell just short of a win, Daytona State College took WMMI to a thrilling five sets.

As a result of Avila's and her teammates' impressive play on the week, Avila earned honors as Region 8 Setter of the Week. Avila recorded a combined 113 assists in three matches.  She also added 9 kills and 34 digs.

The Lady Falcons were an impressive unit in Tuesday night's win over the Patriots of Central Florida.  The attackers for Daytona State landed 39 kills on the night hitting an impressive .242 for the match.  Sophomore setter, Bruna Avila, was a big part of the Falcon's success.  She dished out 35 assists on the night and recorded 3 kills to add to the Falcon's offensive success. Avila was also a defensive asset digging 11 balls on the match.

Thursday night the Falcons faced off with Mid-Florida Conference opponent Eastern Florida State College.  The Falcons struggled early, but were able to manufacture a three set win.  Again, Avila was a force for the Falcons recording 27 assists, 8 digs and 3 kills.

Saturday, Daytona State College traveled to Palatka, Florida to take on 5th ranked New Mexico Military Institute.  NMMI was an impressive squad with a fast, high powered offense.  The Falcons had their work cut out for them.  After just barely dropping set 1, 23-25, the Falcons went on to capture sets two and three.  Daytona State faltered in set four as a direct result of struggles in their serve receive pass.  The final set was controlled by NMMI throughout, handing the Falcons their third loss on the season. 

Overall Daytona State played well on the match, and were led by Avila.  Avila distributed 51 assists on the match.  She also contributed 15 digs and 3 kills. 

The Lady Falcons are back in action with Mid-Florida Conference play Tuesday, October 1st as they take on #1 in the nation, Polk State College.
