Lady Falcons Drop Match to Hillsborough

The Lady Falcons traveled to Tampa Tuesday night to take on the Hawks of Hillsborough Community College.  The Hawks and Falcons both came into the match undefeated after their opening weekend of play.

The first set saw multiple lead changes as the score seesawed back and forth.  The score was tied 20-20, at which point the Hawks commanded the lead for good winning set 1, 25-20.

Hillsborough jumped out to an early lead in set two, but the Falcons managed to fight their way back into the set.  However, the Falcons fell just short of taking the set, losing 22-25.

The Falcons rebounded well and took a commanding 8-2 lead in set three only to see their lead slowly slip away, and the Hawks take command of the match, winning 25-21.

"We struggled with consistency throughout the match.  We were unable to consistently produce a quality first ball contact, which led to a generally inefficient set, which ultimately led to an overall poor attack percentage on the night.  This inconsistent play kept us from being able to close out a set against the Hawks," commented Stegall on the Falcons overall performance Tuesday night.

Despite the Falcon's inconsistent passing, they were led offensively by sophomore middle, Alexis Thompson.  Thompson hit an impressive .333 on the night, landing 9 kills for the Falcons.

"Thompson was very effective in the middle tonight.  She showed her athleticsim and versatility, hitting a multitude of shots on a variety of sets," remarked Stegall on Thompson's performance.  Thompson has verbally already verbally committed to the Hatters of Stetson for 2020.  She demonstrated her athletic prowness in her performance Tuesday night.

As a team, the Falcons were only able to manufacture 31 kills with a dismal .115 team attack percentage.  Errors pleged Daytona State all night.  The Hawks were led by strong freshmen outside attacker, Isabel Martin.  Martin recorded 14 kills for the Hawks and hit .231 on the match.

Weather permitting with Hurricane Dorian looming off the coast of Florida, the Falcons will take on Florida Southwestern at Polk State College Friday night at 5 PM.
