Daytona State College Opens Mid-Florida Conference Play with Win and Notch a 14th in the Nation Ranking in Recent NJCAA Poll
September 20, 2016

The Lady Falcons opened Mid-Conference play at home, hosting the Wave of Florida State College at Jacksonville.  The Falcons have had a challenging couple weeks of play with sophomore outside hitter, Erika Barbour on the sidelines with an injury.

Despite Barbour's injury the Lady Falcons would seal a 3-0 victory over FSCJ.  Sets 1 and 2 were a back-and-forth battle for the first 20 points of the set, to finally see the Falcons take charge of the sets closing out set 1, 25-22, and set 2, 25-23.  The final set saw the Falcons pull away early, defeating FSCJ 25-16 in the final set of play.

The Falcons were led offensively by sophomore Tania Kottke.  Kottke hit an impressive .433 on the night recording 15 kills with on 2 errors on 30 attempts.  Freshmen  middle hitter, Sandra Hovels added 9 kills, while Madison Rogers capped off the top attackers with 7 kills. Daytona State's defense was led by freshman libero, Yorelis Rios.  She notched 11 digs on the night.  The Falcon's offense was quite effective in this first conference match up, with Daytona State recording a solid .299 attack percentage on the night.

The Lady Falcons continue to hold strong in the NJCAA National Poll, ranking a solid 14th in the nation, despite the recent adversity in their line up due to Barbour's injury.  The Falcons are hopeful to have Barbour back in the mix next week as they continue with Mid-Florida Conference play.

Daytona State see their next Mid-Conference opponent on their home court Thursday night as they take on the Saints of Sante Fe College.
