Region 8 Champions

Region 8 Champions

Daytona Beach, FL (dscfalcons.com): Saturday, October 21st the Falcons faced off against the Polk State Eagles in their final game of the season before the Region 8 tournament. It was an exciting day on Daytona State's campus, as the DSC Homecoming 2017 events continued throughout the day, housing the car show in the morning, the Journey to the Tailgate and tailgating festivities throughout the afternoon, a men's soccer match at 2pm and finally the women's Breast Cancer Awareness game and sophomore night against Polk State at 4 pm.

Tonight's game is the last regular season home game for the women's soccer program and for the graduating sophomore class.  Tonight we would like to recognize the 19 sophomores for their contributions to the success of the program.  Over the last two years, the Falcons have won 21 games, scored 102 goals, and maintained a 3.42 team GPA.  In their inaugural season they finished 2nd in Region 8 and ranked 12th nationally.  They were one game away from qualifying for the NJCAA National Tournament.

Falcon's have improved upon their accomplishments from last year.  They are currently ranked 5th in the country and have won the regular season Region 8 Championship.  When asked about the sophomore class Coach Jones said, "This sophomore class will always be special to me as they believed in the vision and set the standard for our program.  Anyone who enters this program in the future will have to live up the standards set by this class.  I am truly honored and grateful to have had the chance to work with them over the last two years and know they will represent us well as they move on.  I cannot thank them enough for joining us in this journey the past two years."

The Falcons had a commanding performance on the night, finishing the game 5-0, remaining unbeaten on their home field. Megan Warner (Soph., Watford, England) was first to score for Daytona finding the back of the net with her head of a nicely placed corner kick from Shanade Hopcroft (Soph., Ayelsbury, England) at the 24 minute mark. Hopcroft would find Heather Nulty (Soph., Winter Springs, FL) nine minutes later on a through ball near the penalty kick line to go up 2-0 entering into half time.

The second half again saw the Falcons controlling the game. Alexis Vazquez (Soph., Orlando, FL) proved to be a real offensive threat as she was able to connect a cross to Michaella Krebser (Soph., Bradenton, FL) at the 54th minute and then with Nulty again at the 61st minute redirecting it with her head. The final goal would come 13 minutes later off another fantastic service from Sophomore Naomi Gurrola (Broomfield, CO), slotting the ball back across the goal to an oncoming Cheyenne Beck (Soph., Panama City, FL).

The two goals by Nulty brings her to 11 on the season, good for 2nd in total points at 24. Kaila Armstrong currently sits at 25 points with 9 goals and 7 assists.

Daytona State's next contest will take place at 7pm on Friday Oct. 27th for the first round of the NJCAA Region 8 tournament against the winner of tonight's matchup between Polk State and ASA Miami.
