Falcons Top Eagles in Conference Play

Falcons Top Eagles in Conference Play
Daytona Beach, FL (DSCFalcons.com)- Daytona State traveled to Lakeland, FL for their second conference game of the season, Saturday Oct. 1st to take on the Polk State College Eagles. Before the Saturday contest, the Eagles had only just suffered their first defeat on the season to cross conference opponent, Eastern Florida State Titans (1).

"We had spent the week talking about our team's ability to take responsibility for ourselves and the direction of our program. We knew coming into the game that there would be some adversity. We were going on the road to a tough Polk State team that had only suffered one loss all year."

"This team has a great deal of competitive fire and motivation. I think it was our heart and determination that let us persevere on Saturday. We certainly were not at our best but found a way to be successful and that is an essential characteristic in successful programs," said Coach Jones on the weekend.

On Saturday, the Falcons got on the board only five minutes into the contest off of a long range shot by Cat Yibirin (Coral Springs, FL). Yibirin, an outside back, received the ball from Megan Warner (Watford, England) leading her into the attack. Yibirin's early shot from the top of the box beat the Eagles' keeper to the far post. Despite having over 10 shots in the first half, the Falcons would not score again for 45 minutes.

The Eagles' lone shot on goal came in the first half on a point blank shot, when they broke through the Falcons' back line. Kristian Shores (New Symrna, FL) came off her line and deflected the shot wide to preserve her 5th shutout on the season. The Falcons' have kept a clean sheet in the last 6 game and have only allowed a stifling 12 shots on goal for the season.

The second half started similar to the first, with a goal 5 minutes in, but with Warner on the end of it. Warner received the ball 20 yds from goal, beat 3 Eagles defenders and slotted the ball far post to improve the score to 2-0. This is Warner's sixth goal of the season.

In the 72nd minute, the Falcons earned their 5th corner kick of the match. Ellen Clarabut (Middlesex, England) was able to get her head on Shanade Hopcroft's (Aylesbury, England) service for her first goal of the season.
