Chan Wins World Championships in Switzerland

Coming off of a National Championship title at Daytona State College this past spring, Tiffany Chan continues to excel in a big way.  Chan captured the 15thedition of the World University Championship in Switzerland.  This Falcon Athlete standout and FCSAA Female Athlete of the Year, birdied the final hole of regulation play to force a playoff with Spain’s Marta Sanz.  In the second sudden death play-off hole Chan birdied hole to clinch the victory.  Chan finished 10-under par in regulation play with scores of 71-68-69-70.

A seasoned player, Chan knew just what she needed to accomplish on the final hole of play and calmly sunk a 10ft birdie putt on the 18th at the Crans-sur-Sierre Course in the Swiss Alps to beat a strong field which included two members of this year’s winning US Curtis Cup Team. 

Chan played from behind most of the final round, but fought back with birdies on 7 and 8.  She lost a shot to Sanz on the 13th and then Sanz followed with an eagle on the 14th, but Chan matched her eagle on the 14th to stay within a shot of the lead.  Chan knew coming into the 18th hole she would need to make a birdie to have a chance and she did just that. 

“It’s funny because I didn’t hit the ball that well, but my putting and short game generally has been really strong,” said Chan.  Chan’s poise was essential and she drew on her experience and flourishing confidence, attained from her and her teammates’ NJCAA National Championship in May. 

Chan has broken into the top 50 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings with this win and is focusing on working harder.  “After this win I can aim higher,” said Chan.  “I’m going to spend the next couple of months working hard on my weaknesses and will try to do my best.”
