LADY FALCONS FINISH 10th at UCF CHALLENGE – SETS TEAM SCORING RECORD -JIWON JEON LEADS FALCONS WITH 2ND PLACE INDIVIDUAL FINISH

February 7, 2017:  The Daytona State College Women's Golf Team began their spring season this past weekend at the UCF Challenge.  The Lady Falcons were up against one of the toughest fields they will see all year and showed that they were up for the challenge.

The Lady Falcons posted team scores of 293-278-301(872) which was good enough for a 10th place finish out of the 17 team field.  The Lady Falcons broke a 7 year old team scoring record during the 2nd round by posting a 10-under 278 which bettered the old scoring record by 2 strokes which was set in the 2010 NJCAA National Championship.  "This was one of the most exciting days in Falcon history and this group of young ladies have worked hard and earned this performance", said Coach Laura Brown in her 19th season as Head Coach for the Falcons.  "I've seen every single round in the history of this program and this was the best performance I have seen to date.   This was a fun group to watch and they really made a charge at the end of their round.  Clemson won the event with team scores of 286-283-281 (850), Miami finished 2nd with scores of 287-280-283(850) while Texas, UCF and Mississippi State all finished tied for 3rd with team totals of 854.

The Falcons were led by tournament runner-up Jiwon Jeon, a freshman from South Korea, who shot scores of 69-66-71.  Jeon finished 1 stroke behind tournament medalist Chieh Jessica Peng from Mississippi State who posted rounds of 66-65-74.   Jeon ties the 2nd lowest tournament score in the history of the program with her 10 under performance.  "Jiwon played great this week.  She really struck the ball well and I'm very happy for her.  This was a very strong field and for her to play this well and finish second was very impressive.  She was disappointed she didn't win the event since she played so well, but this performance should give her the confidence she needs moving into the season."  Other finishers for the Falcons include Kaye Kwon (75-69-75), Grace St-Germain (75-71-77), Kendall Johnson (76-72-78) and Claire Becker with scores of 74-81-82.

"I am very happy and proud of my players on their impressive play at top notch event.  They played great and I couldn't be any happier for this group setting a new scoring record.  We have a very competitive spring schedule and their performance at this event should really give them the confidence they need going into our next few events," said Coach Brown.  The Lady Falcons return to action February 20-21 at the Amelia Island Collegiate hosted by Jacksonville University in Fernandina Beach, FL.
