FALCONS EARN MID-FLORIDA CONFERENCE BASKETBALL RECOGNITION
Four Daytona State Women's Basketball players have been named to the Mid-Florida Conference Teams as announced by the conference office. Both Arielle Harvey and Njeri Nelms were selected to the First Team, while Ka'Neeshia Brown and Destiny Arvinger were selected to the Second Team. The All Conference teams are comprised of the top 20 players (10 to each team) in the Mid-Florida Conference (MFC) as voted upon by the conference coaches.
During the 2016-17 season, Arielle Harvey led the team in points per game average (16.2), blocks (47) and was second in rebounding (5.4). On the season Harvey also led the team in double figure games, with 26 games of 28 in double figures. She was the third leading scorer in the MFC and 11th overall in Region 8. During Mid-Florida Conference play, Harvey averaged 18.3 points per game. At 5'11 and able to play both on the perimeter and interior, Harvey was extremely adept at getting to the free throw line throughout the year. Harvey's 7.5 free throw attempts per game led both the Region 8 and Mid-Florida conference statistically. That number placed her 4th in the nation. Her 79.6% free throw percentage was 3rd best in the Mid-Florida conference and 8th best in Region 8. As a transfer, this is Harvey's first year making the All-Conference First Team.
Sophomore and second year Daytona State player, Njeri Nelms saw her production skyrocket from a year ago. She was second on the team in scoring with 14.4 points per game. Nelms played in 26 games and scored in double figures 23 times. The 5'5 combo guard also led the team in steals (50), 3PT field goals made (57), 3PT field goal percentage (33.9) and was second in assists and assists per game (68/2.9). Nelms was the 7th leading scorer in the Mid-Florida Conference and saw her overall increase to 15.1 points per game during conference play. Another excellent free throw shooter at 77.8%, Nelms was 3rd on the team, 4th in the conference and 11th in the region in free throw shooting percentage. This is Nelms first year being selected to the All-Conference First Team.
Sophomore Ka'Neeshia Brown, also showed a solid season of growth during her second season at Daytona State. A 6'3 center, Brown averaged 10.8 points and 13.6 rebounds per game with the Falcons. After starting out the season facing one on one matchups, opponents within the Mid-Florida conference moved to zone defenses to limit Brown's touches on the interior. Brown led the team in field goal percentage (44.5) and rebounds per game (13.6). In addition to leading the Falcons in rebounding, Brown also led the Mid-Florida Conference, Region 8 and finished the season 2nd in the nation. A UNC-Charlotte signee, Brown was the only Falcon to start every game during the 2016-17 season.
Freshman Destiny Arvinger was another solid guard for the Falcons. The 5'3 sparkplug led the team in average minutes per game (34), assists (116), assists per game (4.5), and free throw percentage (80.7). On the season, Arvinger averaged 13.6 points per game (9th in the conference and 24th in the region) and 3.6 rebounds per game. Arvinger's free throw percentage led the Mid-Florida Conference and placed her 5th in the Region 8 rankings and 32nd in the nation. Her 4.5 assists per game average placed her 2nd in the Mid-Florida Conference and 9th in Region 8. A true freshman, Arvinger was one of only three freshmen named to the 20 person all conference teams.
