Women's Basketball Scores Program's First NJCAA National Tournament Berth

March 6, 2016

Last Thursday, the Lady Falcons experienced a season blow, a devastating 59-76 loss to Northwest Florida and the uncertainty whether their season would end prematurely.  However, at the close of the weekend, Daytona State College had something monumental to celebrate, the program's first trip to the NJCAA National Tournament.

Northwest Florida, who upset Daytona State Thursday night, fought off an impressive Chipola in the final four match ups to earn their spot in the championship game against Gulf Coast State College.

Gulf Coast State College, ranked number one in the last national NJCAA Poll, claimed the automatic seed out of the FCSAA Regional defeating Northwest Florida in the championship match up of the FCSAA Tournament Saturday afternoon.  Northwest Florida would receive a zone qualifier bid to the NJCAA National Tournament rewarding them for their upset over Daytona State and competitive match up with Gulf State College in the championship game Saturday.

Daytona State's strong play all season, resulting in a 28-1 regular season record and a 2nd place ranking in the final NJCAA National Poll, allowed them to overcome their early departure from the FCSAA Tournament.  The Lady Falcons will hit the courts at the G. Lemerand Center this week refocusing and attacking some of their shortcomings from over the weekend, as well as, beginning preparation for next week's big stage in Lubbock, Texas.  Daytona State College will learn its fate tomorrow as the tournament bracket will be announced Monday, March 7th at 2:03 PM.

The Lady Falcons will likely focus on getting their shooting back on track.  The Falcons, who averaged a 44% field goal percentage all season, shot just over 28% against Northwest Florida Thursday night.  Additionally, Daytona State had been lethal from long range this season averaging close to 40% from the 3 point arc all season long.  Thursday they managed to shot just 21% from 3 point range in the FCSAA Tournament.

The Falcons are eager to get back on the court and avenge last week's unanticipated loss as they travel to Lubbock, Texas for the NJCAA National Tournament. National Tournament play will kick off March 14th and will feature three FCSAA schools; Gulf Coast State College, Northwest Florida, and Daytona State College.
