Daytona State Softball Finishes 2021 Season in Third Place – Announces All-Conference Selections

The Falcons concluded their season last Thursday at Santa Fe State College after dropping two close games, 1-0 and 3-2, to the second seeded Saints. Third seeded Daytona State advanced to the finals after run-ruling #4 seed Seminole State College of Florida in a single game on Tuesday. The Falcons finish the year with a 25-20 record. Head Coach Keli Harrell reflects on her third season with the Falcons. “I’m really proud of this team. We overcame so much adversity. After not having a fall together due to Covid, our first team practice was just two weeks before the season started. My assistant coach also took another job during this time frame. We had the cards stacked against us, but our team is full of fighters. Harrell credits strong leadership within the team, and chemistry among the players, for much of her team’s success. “Our sophomores provided leadership within the group. Everyone held each other accountable and kept high expectations. It did not matter to anyone that we never got to work together in the fall. Whenever we fell short, we would revisit our goals and get back to work. We set the bar high and kept pushing forward. By the second half of the season, we finally started playing good softball.” The Falcons return seven starters next season, along with first-team All-Conference pitcher, Alyssa Kelly. Kelly led the conference in innings pitched (164.2) and ERA (2.13), with a 16-11 record. Five more Falcons received second-team All-Conference accolades, including: Destiny Colgate, Asia Thomas, Daisy McQuain, and Anna Margetis. Colgate led the Falcons in hits (52), doubles (15), and batting average (.366), while McQuain led the team in triples (6), homeruns (11), and RBI (40). Thomas led the team in runs (44), walks (25), steals (14), and on-base percentage (.466). Freshman Anna Margetis boasted a .385 batting average in conference play and drove in 30 RBI on the year.
