Bio

A 2019 graduate of Viera High School, Martinez brings strong credentials to Daytona State.  He finished his high school cross country career with a 16:17 5k time, good for 12th at the Florida State Cross Country Championships.   In his senior spring track season, he went 9:39 in the 3200 meter, setting a personal record at the 2019 Florida State Track meet that saw many delays in the two day meet.  He set a 1600 meter personal record of 4:32.55, winning his conference title.  A top prospect out of high school, the Falcons were fortunate to attract him in only year 2 of the program.

Outlook for 2019:  Wilson commented "Andy has the ability to run beyond Daytona State.  He will be looked upon to run each race to the best of his ability.  I think he will adapt well to the 8k distance and will help our other top guys reach their goals as well.  I don’t think there is a reason to set a goal for Andy, because I know he sets his own."

Review of the 2019 Season:  The top runner for the Falcons in the three first four meets of the seaon, Martinez ran a personal best and school record of 27:15 for the 8000 meter distance.  Martinez was the top Falcon at the Border Clash (Valdosta State meet) placing tenth overall, the Embry Riddle Classic placing 12th, and the Disney Classic placing 10th.  He sustained a season ending injury, only to come back to full strength on the track in the spring of 2020 to run a personal best 4:09 1500 meters at the University of Tampa on February 29th, two weeks before the shutdown of the spring season.

Outlook for 2020:  Wilson stated, "With the uncertainty of the 2020 season, student-athletes were faced with decisions and challenges.  Andy made the tough decisions to prepare for a season that we could all only hope would occur.   He is driven to get to the next level and I see him running in the top pack at the 2020 NJCAA Division II National Championships if that opportunity arises.

Review of the 2020 Season:  Daytona State's lead runner in every meet of the season.  Martinez opened up with a 16:01 5k on a rain soaked course, besting the field by 50 seconds.  His 25:48 for 8000 meters on the FSU course at the beginning of October, good for 7th place competing against NCAA Div 1 runners, was a confidence boost going into the post season.  He was the Region 8 champion, and then went on to place 4th a t the NJCAA Division 2 Cross Country Championships, earning All American status.

Outlook for 2021:
