Men's Soccer Team Blanks Andrew College
The Daytona State College men's soccer team shut out Andrew College Saturday afternoon in Cuthbert, Georgia to put them at a record of 2-0 on the season.
After going eight straight days without practice due to Hurricane Dorian and traveling 5 ½ hours on a bus to play the same day, the Falcons showed their perseverance in difficult circumstances. The Falcons walked away with a score of 9-0.
"We knew it would be difficult for us to play after going so long without training," said head coach Bart Sasnett. "I trusted that my players would do what they had to do to win the game and they did just that."
The men's soccer team was only up 1-0 at halftime from a lone goal that came from freshman Dujon Martin. This was Martin's 5th goal in only two matches.
"Credit to Andrew College," said coach Bart. "They came out ready to play and held us to a 1-0 lead all through the half. They are a well-coached team and very organized."
After regrouping during the halftime break and the bus legs shaken off, the Falcons came out in the second half ready. Ten minutes into the second half Sophomore Pablo Leigh took a ripping shot from outside of the 18 yard box that went right through the keepers legs, making the score now 2-0. That goal is what got things going for the Falcons.
"I knew once we scored that second goal that others were soon to follow," said Sasnett.
That is exactly what happened. Freshman Dujon Martin got on the board again off a cross from a corner kick that was headed back across the goal from freshman Prince Nwabudike. Shortly after that goal, Martin went on to convert a penalty kick that gave him his first hat-trick at Daytona State.
"That is exactly why we brought Dujon here," said Sasnett. "He finds ways to score goals."
With the score now at 4-0, Coach Sasnett unloaded the depth of his bench and put all fresh legs in the match. Sophomore John Nalus got on the board after beating multiple defenders and then the keeper to slot the ball nicely into the back of the net.
Minutes after that goal, local freshman D'angelo Mullings scored back-to-back in a three-minute time span. His first goal came with an assist from his brother, Tevaun Mullings.
With new bodies constantly rotating into the lineup, the Falcons were controlling the match. Freshman and Daytona Beach local Will Crotty got his first collegiate goal with an assist from his old Daytona Beach Seabreeze High School teammate Benny Hartsell.
"We've watched our former Seabreeze players play throughout the years," said coach Sasnett. "It's great watching them go from an incredible high school career to seeing them produce at the collegiate level."
With two minutes remaining in the match, freshman Tevaun Mullings got on the scoreboard with another assist from Benny Hartsell, putting the Falcons at 9-0.
The Falcons walked away with their first shutout of the season all while taking a total of 40 shots and 25 of them being on goal.
The Falcons will host Keiser University's JV team on Tuesday the 10th at the Daytona State Soccer Stadium at 3:00.
