Falcons Go 2-0 in Region 8 Play
The Daytona State College Men's Soccer team traveled to Hialeah, FL on Sunday to face opponent ASA College Miami in a Region 8 matchup.
The Falcons, who are now 8-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play, defeated the Silver Storm 3-2 in an intense matchup that lasted 105 minutes. The match went into two 10-minute overtime periods, with the Falcons eventually coming out with the win in the final five minutes.
"This was a big win for us," says head coach Bart Sasnett. "The guys fought hard the entire match and played through adversity. All credit to ASA. They played extremely well and were very organized. They definitely have a multitude of players that can beat a team if given the opportunity. It will be a tough match when we meet again on the 21st."
The Silver Storm got on the board within the first five minutes of the match off an open header right outside the 6-yard box. The Falcons stayed down a goal until the 33rd minute when sophomore Ryan Sandidge stepped up to put away a penalty kick, which tied the Falcons at 1-1.
Going into halftime tied, the Falcons knew they had to come out with high intensity in order to put the game away. Unfortunately, for the Falcons, sophomore goalkeeper Phil D'Amico received a red card only 10 minutes into the second half. This put the Falcons down a man and put freshman goalkeeper Charly Roberts into the match.
The Silver Storm took advantage of the situation and netted a long shot passed Roberts to put the game at 2-1.
With only five minutes remaining in regulation time and a man down, sophomore forward Joe O'Sullivan came up huge for the Falcons and headed in a cross from freshman Noah Graziano, putting the game at 2-2 and taking it into OT.
The Falcons fought hard for the 1st OT period and left a lot of chances on the field. Going into the 2nd OT period, the Falcons kept playing for the win and were eventually awarded another penalty kick. Once again, Ryan Sandidge stepped up to take the shot and put it right into the back of the net, giving the Falcons the win.
"It's victories like this that really bring a team together," says Sasnett. "Joe stepped up and did what I know he is capable of doing and Charly came in and did very well in the goal."
