Daytona State College Announces Addition of Esports as an Intercollegiate Sport

Daytona State College is in the process of launching a competitive esports program during the 2023-24 academic year.

Sebastian Morales, the recently hired esports coordinator, is working in the Lemerand Athletic Center but will be spending much of his time in the new esports competition lab in the Lemerand Student Center. Sebastian can be reached at Sebastian.morales@daytonastate.edu or at (386) 506-3838.

Esports requires a tremendous amount of critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity from players to achieve and sustain success. It reaches beyond traditional sports to create an all-inclusive environment that breaks barriers for students.

Currently fifteen Florida State Colleges sponsor esports programs as a competitive engagement activity for students. Daytona State College has joined the NJCAAE organization which will be the sanctioning body that oversees the competitions. There will be numerous competitive opportunities to provide DSC students that participate in the various games that will be sponsored. The Falcon esports program will begin with four games: Rocket League, Overwatch, League of Legends and Valorant. These teams will all begin competing in a tier 3 league that is required for any new school joining the league. The program can have multiple teams in each game join this tier 3 league. Tryouts for the varsity teams league which will begin in the spring term will occur during the fall semester.

College officials are currently working to build out the new esports competition lab which is slated to be completed around the beginning of fall classes. This hi-tech lab with 18 state-of-the-art computers will provide a great home venue for the students to utilize daily in practice, scrimmages, and competition. The esports lab will be in the Lemerand Student Center on the 2nd floor in the Student Life/Activities area.

This program will offer many opportunities for students not competing on a competitive roster as well! The Daytona State Esports Club will have many opportunities for students to play games, network with other students, and get involved with the program without being on a roster. There will be student officer roles that need to be filled for beginning a student committee for the program. The program/club will also have a content/stream team. More information on the stream team will be announced later.

Interested DSC students may join the school Discord server as we will be making the most of our announcements in that channel.
