Daytona State Baseball Begins Infield Improvements

The Daytona State Baseball program is using the summer of 2018 to keep its field as one of the top junior college playing surfaces in the state of Florida. On the morning of May 7th, Daytona State College Facility employees broke ground on a summer long project that will work to relevel the infield playing surface. 

Over time the dirt from the infield will find its way into the grass which will cause the surface to become uneven resulting in errant bounces on ground balls and pour drainage during Florida rain showers. 

This project will eliminate these problems for years to come. The crew working on the field removed all of the grass and sod of the infield from around the home plate area extending all the way out into the outfield. Once the sod is removed the dirt will be leveled and graded to be conducive to proper and efficient drainiage of rain water. This will improve the ability of the infield surface to recover quicker from Florida showers which will result in less rain outs and safer playing surface. 

Once the dirt on the infield surface is graded the crew will sprig new bermuda grass and allow it to grow for the remainder of the summer. Sprigging is the planting of plant roots at spaced intervals in furrows or holes. The new bermuda grass will have close to three months to have time to grow before the Daytona State baseball team will be on it for the Fall 2018 season.
