Former Falcon Ortiz Gets 6th Win and Lifts Sharks to NCAA Tournament
Former Daytona State College left hander, will open up for the Nova Southeastern Sharks in the NCAA II World Series this weekend.
Johnny Ortiz boasted an impressive career during his time as a Falcon from 2013-2015. During his two year stint with the Falcons, Ortiz had 22 appearances for Daytona State College. In his 2014 campaign Ortiz had a 3.27 ERA. He had a consistent second season, finishing just over a 3.5 ERA. In both seasons Ortiz averaged 50 strikeouts on the season and was a consistent force on the mound for the Falcons.
His success at the NJCAA level lent him the opportunity to continue his collegiate baseball career at Nova Southeastern University, an NCAA Division II college in Fort Lauderdale, FL.
Ortiz's first season with the Sharks has been a true success. For the first-time in the program's history, the No. 6 Sharks baseball team who compiled a regular season record of 39-16 and a Sunshine State Conference record of 18-6 have earned their way into the NCAA Division II World Series. They will be traveling to Cary, NC after defeating No. 14 Delta State University in Regional play Monday in Tampa. Ortiz pitched his Sharks to victory, earning himself his sixth win on the season, as the Sharks won 3-1.
The Sharks will play the winner of the East Region, the Franklin Pierce Ravens, on Sunday, May 29th at 1:00 p.m. in Cary, N.C. Best of luck to former Falcon, Johnny Ortiz and his Nova Southeastern teammates, as they open up Sunday against Franklin Pierce University.
